interior_
Ahh…feels good having a little break from school and slowly getting into portfolio and degree, of course. Here’s a little interior render, not sure for what yet.
goodbye_saab
Today we all learned that Sweden’s Saab brand is dead. It’s only fitting to post some of the pics from the Saab museum in Trollhättan we visited this past week.
volvo_142_retro_render
We just got back from a class trip to Goteborg to visit some Volvo and Saab museums, some assembly plants and to do some presentations to the design staff at Volvo. Awesome times. I was inspired by a race-spec Volvo 142 to do this render. I actually used an old race photo and sketched over it. The original can be viewed here.
c30_something
I’m not sure why I’m sketching these volvo c30 type cars, but I’ll just continue on doing so
lightcraft_update
Today we had our internal mid review presentation for the lightcraft. It went quite well and I’m stoked with the progress being made so far. I can’t wait to start designing the final interior and really making those details pop. Here is a slide from today.
unwaste_space
My friend Yongbang Ho and I entered the Designboom / Nissan “Think Outside the Parking Box” design competition. I’m proud to say that out of 3059 designers from 96 different countries that participated, we won second place. Yesterday evening they posted the results which means I can start posting it as well. It was fun playing part city planner and part architect and coming up with something totally different. To see the results, check out the coverage on Designboom.com
This concept ties the Nissan Qashqai closer to nature and toward an ecological contribution. A parked vehicle is wasting city space. This concept gives the car a conscience, it can contribute back and have more purpose throughout it’s daily use. Solasis is a solar light tower that generates electric power from sunlight by focusing concentrated solar radiation reflected from the Qashqai’s photovoltaic panels and mirrors onto a heat exchanger mounted in the tower. That energy is then fed back into the grid powering vehicles and buildings.
volvo_sketch
Yeah…this is the last thing I should be doing but just wanted to hope on photoshop and sketch something out.
wheelin_n_dealing
Here’s a proposal and revision for a Ford steering wheel, perhaps something that would go on an electric Fusion or Focus. This was done for an interior workshop here at UID. We started off by designing a steering wheel for an assigned brand, presented the original concepts in a 2-day workshop, then revised the wheel according to the feedback. In my case I had to move the buttons up to make them more accessible which subsequently placed the text on a horizontal line. Good exercise.
car_girls
Thought these were kind of cool and website could use some girls on it. The last one is especially awesome.

lightcraft_sketches
Here are some more interior development sketches. The photoshop render is just a test, nothing is even close to being final, but thought I should post something on here.
fire_in_the_sky
It’s 5:30pm in Umea and the sky is on fire. Had to take a sketch break and step out of the classroom to snap these.
day_one_sketches
Today was a blast. I spent most of it sketching seats for the interior of this ‘lightcraft.’ Stayed tuned for the development as it goes down. Here are some highlights, but the good ones look a little too automotive, but it’s just day one.
lightcraft_laser_propulsion_vehicle
So…we just kicked off our vehicle interior project here at UID and it’s going to be an awesome/unique ten weeks. Along with the 2nd year product and interaction design masters programs, we’re designing the entire experience of traveling in a vehicle capable of hypersonic speeds through laser beam propulsion technology. Really hard to take it all in, but basically we’re talking tractor beams, pusher beams, vehicles boosting out of the atmosphere, coasting through space vacuums, zero G’s, 45 minute travel times to the other side of the Earth, 6-8 minute low Earth orbit and basically too much to even consider. So, stayed tuned for the work as it progresses. I’ll eventually set up a category for this and post all the development because we’re allowed to. The picture below is a shot taken at night of a prototype test flight. The light streaks are little explosions that guide the vehicle up into orbit. Check out the youtube clip here.

sketch_club_small_volvo_truck
This week we’ve decided to sketch small Volvo pick-up trucks for Sketch Club. Really, I should be working on a philosophy paper… perhaps if it had wheels I would work on it right now. Perhaps later on I’ll try a rendering of one of these sketches, but now it’s time to start a new project.
frankfurt_road_and_sea_trip
Just came back from an epic road trip and I posted some of the pics under the photo section. We started in Umea, drove to Goteborg then took a ferry to Kiel. From there we drove to Frankfurt for to see the autoshow. We also went to Wolfsburg really quickly on our way back to Sweden. 3400km of driving and 28 hours on a ferry made one awesome (school sponsored) road and sea trip.
polo_coupe
I should be doing like a hundred other things instead of messing around with this sketch, but I thought it would be fun to post a coupe like Polo. Plus it adds a little colour to the website.
rambo_lambo
I think this thing will look a lot better in person, but the surfaces seriously look I built this in AliasStudio, which is not a good thing at good all. I hope the matte versions looks better
sketch_club_bentley
So, we’re students and despite all our copious amounts of work we always find ways to keep ourselves more distracted. Last year the students at UID started a sketch club where there’s a different topic to sketch each week. It’s a no pressure ‘post what you kind’ kind of setup. This week the topic is anything Bentley. Here’s a couple quick renders and later this week I’ll scan and post more sketches.
