This will be a part of an ongoing collection. I will eventually take one into alias and fiddle with it there.

volkswagen_moog

UID Student Talks 2010: Klaud Wasiak from Umeå Institute of Design on Vimeo.

The Moog suggests how the future electric Volkswagen might sound like in the near future. Not only through the sounds it produces, but also what its shapes and textures suggest. As electric vehicles take over as the standard vehicle for the masses there is an opportunity to create sounds different from those we’ve heard from vehicles in the past. It’s a chance to stimulate our cityscapes with something more expressive.

The Moog is a vehicle inspired by electronic music, more specifically minimal techno. It is a blend between Volkswagen’s brand philosophies and the characteristics of electronic music. The vehicle also touches on the historic path that electronic music took and to achieve a successful result, a mixture of recognizable and alien elements need to stand out as strong themes for the vehicle.

The design process revolved around a strong research phase, absorbing electronic music, experimentation with electronic music-making and this degree topic is quite abstract, but tangible characteristics were refined and used as plausible details in the final concept.

The unique layer of noise underlying electronic music is represented by a random placement of fractals that run underneath the vehicle. Like bass in a song, some elements are poking out into the exterior. These fractals would also capture the noise and vibration from the road and convert them into energy that can assist with the onboard electronics. The unique sound this electric vehicle makes sound leak out through the wheels. The concept is a mixture between the recognizable and the alien.

Below are some images from the project. If you want to hear what this vehicle sounds like, click here.

hussar_dakar

Inspired by the Winged Cavalry, the swift and agile Hussar Dakar rally vehicle applies the same principles of mobility, adaptability and self-sufficiency sided with an aggressive competitive character.

Similar to the KERS system introduced to Formula 1, these hussar inspired wings are constantly creating kinetic (vibrational & translational) energy during the vehicles movement.  The engineer manages the advanced winged energy regeneration system and strategically distributes the kinetic energy to components of the vehicle during a race. This system also contributes the team by giving them vehicle incredible air breaking power when all wings are rotated in and upright.

Aside from generating kinetic energy, the main weapon of this vehicle is psychological. The wings mounted on the rear of the vehicle make a raw, vicious clatter that will definitely jolt any competitors off their tracks.

lightcraft

This past week we just finished up our Lightcraft interior project. I worked in a group with schoolmates Matthias Menzel and Lena Edman. I posted some of the interior shots and scenes we made for the story board. It was a giant learning curve figuring out how long telling a story really takes. It’s good practice for the degree project.  Lena, our interaction designer , made some really nice animations and I’ll try to post them up once we compress everything. Also, I’ve been hiding the exterior of this vehicle because we could not really change it’s shape, but one of the scenes you can see it on the rooftop. Now, back to cars!

c30_something

I’m not sure why I’m sketching these volvo c30 type cars, but I’ll just continue on doing so

unwaste_space

My friend Yongbang Ho and I entered the Designboom / Nissan “Think Outside the Parking Box” design competition. I’m proud to say that out of 3059 designers from 96 different countries that participated, we won second place. Yesterday evening they posted the results which means I can start posting it as well. It was fun playing part city planner and part architect and coming up with something totally different. To see the results, check out the coverage on Designboom.com

This concept ties the Nissan Qashqai closer to nature and toward an ecological contribution. A parked vehicle is wasting city space. This concept gives the car a conscience, it can contribute back and have more purpose throughout it’s daily use. Solasis is a solar light tower that generates electric power from sunlight by focusing concentrated solar radiation reflected from the Qashqai’s photovoltaic panels and mirrors onto a heat exchanger mounted in the tower. That energy is then fed back into the grid powering vehicles and buildings.

Some sort of Volvo shooting brake with some weird bacteria action going on. Honestly, I just had to get something out…

interior_sketches

Just some interiors I was sketching for fun in photoshop. This blog is still very unorganized, but I’m getting there. After all these images are put in, I’ll start worrying about modifying the theme and changing some of that wonderful coding.

airborn_beemer

So the other night I was listening the Adam Carolla CarCast (I recommend this to all) and they were talking about BMW CSL’s from the early 70′s and how all the pictures of the race versions were always up in the air. I thought it would be fun to sketch over one of the original pictures and change up the design.

volcom_chariot

The California culture inspired Volcom Chariot is a based on an anti-establishment aesthetic that revolts against the current automotive regulations. It boasts a relaxed state of mind that neglects pressure of work and focuses towards interaction within a social environment, more specifically the beach.  The Chariot is edgy and sporty with a very unique style, the same characteristics that are evident in Volcom’s clothing and accessories.

This was a branding project I did in during my first year in Umeå. These are some pages out of the the most recent portfolio. I eventually printed the portfolio using Blurb.com. You should check them out. I was able to get a professional printed booklet delivered to my door for pretty cheap too. Oh yeah, best part is NO MORE SPIRAL BINDING !
